Student Discussion

Science is a way of understanding the natural world. It pushes the curiosity within us and allows us to connect the past with the present.

Please give an example of science in the natural world, and another example of how science can connect the past with the present. Lastly, please share one thing about science that you are curious about.  (Just to get the ideas rolling... some of the things we will be discussing this year include magnets, electricity, genetics, and things that effect the Earth's surface.)

  1. I like how you mentioned curiosity because I think that is a very important aspect for science. It really helps students think about their thinking. By giving examples they are already joining in the process of science by looking at the world around them.
Listing some examples of your own about what's ahead would also help them look forward to the year, and think about what they want to know more about.

  2. This question is excellent for pushing students to think outside the box. Encouraging students to think outside their comfort zone will sharpen their thinking skills, as well as, getting them interested in learning something new. Learning new things, and the process of "knowing" is a essential part of science.

  3. It is great that you provide some concrete examples to get students started -- otherwise, these questions can seem a little abstract. However, I really like that you are trying to help them connect their knowledge about science to their "real" life. As they learn more about science, they may be even better able to articulate these connections (and will be able to see the change in their ideas over time).
